From Clay to the Housewife’s Hands
Concentrating from the late eighteenth century and lasting about 100 years, numerous potters fired wood burning kilns throughout the Mid-Atlantic states.  Redware, typically labeled earthenware by these artisans, dominated the early days, but midway through this period, stoneware pots gained and continued to gain prominence. In discussing this subject, emphasis in general terms will be placed on manufacturing and commercial aspects of these early pot house operations.
Baltimore was one of the city centers of stoneware manufacture. Especially recognized by certain blue cobalt decorations, stoneware growth in the city was in part catalyzed by the War of 1812, when an embargo limited European imports. Today’s collectors of Baltimore stoneware key on potters’ names like Morgan, Myers, Remmey, Paar and Herrmann. Supported with examples of their output, discussion will include references to some of these Baltimore turners.
