Animals leave calling cards wherever they go. Learn how to read the woods to see who has been visiting and what they have been doing. This guided hike workshop will go over some of the basics of animal tracks, trails, and sign as well as some common skulls and bones that you may find along the way. We'll begin our session at the McCann Wetlands Center and then will travel down the hillside to the marsh boardwalk trail, examining the tidal marsh to see who may live there. From the marsh, we'll head through the upland forest and later down to a beaver created pond. Please plan to hike 3-4 miles throughout the workshop and up and down a moderate trail to get to the marsh. Kerry Wixted will be leading this workshop rain or shine. Bring a bagged lunch, warm clothing, and sturdy hiking shoes. Please complete your registration soon to ensure a spot!
Kerry Wixted is an education and outreach specialist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. She runs several statewide programs such as Project WILD for educators and Wild Acres for backyard wildlife habitat enthusiasts. Ms. Wixted holds a B.S. degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management from Frostburg State University, and a M.S. degree in Biology from West Virginia University. The Natural History Society of Maryland is a volunteer-led non-profit organization, so the fee you pay will go directly to support the programs, the nature collections, and the building that make this kind of nature education possible.
