The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was passed in 1990, requiring museums, universities, and any other collecting organization to report and return certain cultural items to the appropriate Native tribe or community, but over 30 years later, at least half of these institutions are still not in compliance with this law. This session is intended to foster a deeper working understanding of NAGPRA requirements and how to achieve compliance with the ultimate goals of facilitating respectful return and building new, authentic relationships with indigenous communities.
After receiving her MA in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Delaware in 2020, Vivien Barnett took on the role of Curatorial & Collections Specialist for the Maryland Center for History and Culture located in Baltimore, MD. Barnett also serves as the co-chair of MCHC’s Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion Task Force, and as a member of working groups related to Reparative Descriptions and Indigenous Peoples Outreach.
