It is summer and it is safe to go back into the water. NHSM is gearing up for Sharkfest (July16). To help get us in the sharky mood, shark researcher, educator, author, founder of Sharks4Kids, and Shark Con Shark Hero Award winner, Jillian Morris, will be giving us a behind the scenes look at how and why we study sharks.

Jillian is involved with Project Lemon Aid to establish a base line population survey of juvenile lemon sharks at sites around the Turks and Caicos Island in order to investigate if the females return to the same mangroves they grew up in. The project partners with the Edward C Gartland Youth Centre to provide hands on learning opportunities for local students. They are able to join us on the research days and participate in all aspects of the research.

Born and raised in Maine, Jillian’s love for the ocean started at an early age and has continued to play an integral role in her adult life. She has spent thousands of hours in the field working and diving with sharks across the globe. She is a mom, marine biologist, shark conservationist, author and educator. She has filmed for numerous television shows and networks, has appeared on Shark Week and is a PADI Ambassadiver. She was named Scuba Diving Magazine’s July 2016 Sea Hero , awarded the inaugural Shark Con Shark Hero Award in 2017 and was the Go Blue Awards 2020 Blue Ambassador of the Year.  Jillian is the founder and president of the education nonprofit Sharks4Kids . She is the author of Norman the Nurse Shark and Shark Super Powers and a member of the prestigious Ocean Artists Society.
