In recent years, a lot of attention has been given to global patterns of insect decline. Elizabeth Crone is part of a national working group that is assessing status and trends of butterflies in the United States, using data from NABA 4th of July butterfly counts and other similar programs. Elizabeth will present some of the challenges of working with these data, the methods used in our analyses, and some preliminary results and implications for how butterfly populations will respond to climate change. This project is a work in progress, so the talk will be relatively informal, with opportunities for discussion.

About the presenter: Elizabeth Crone is a Professor at University of California Davis. Her family is from Maryland and she usually visit a few times per year.

This meeting will take place in person at NHSM. If you are unable to make it and would like to attend virtually, email the club coordinator for a Zoom link.

If you love butterflies and moths, consider joining the NHSM Lep Club. The Lep Club is made up of novice and expert lepidopterists who meet to exchange knowledge and support concerning habitat, threats, food sources, identification, and life cycle of butterflies and moths. Club meetings encourage a sharing of knowledge for the raising and breeding of moths and butterflies through hands-on lessons and guest speakers. Club members are also involved in outreach in the greater Baltimore community through educational programs and service projects. Most club meetings feature a guest speaker who shares their knowledge on a topic related to moths and butterflies. Meetings also include time to distribute caterpillars and eggs.
