At this month’s meeting of the NHSM Lep Club, we’ll learn how to identify host plants and nectar plants in our neighborhoods and to match them with the Lepidoptera species that utilize each plant, using the iNaturalist app. The presentation will also discuss leafminers, a common but under-appreciated group of moths. Over 100 lepidopteran leafminer species have been documented in the state of Maryland so far via the Leafminers of North America project.
About the presenter: Joe Montes de Oca works in Everglades National Park completing plant monitoring work in a restoration area called the Hole-in-the-Donut. He spends most of his free time exploring the many habitats of South Florida: blacklighting for moths, hiking trails, snorkeling reefs nearshore, and poking around vacant lots.
This meeting will take place in person at NHSM. If you would like to attend virtually, email the club coordinator (mfalk@marylandnature.org) for a Zoom link.
