Daniel Dean is the research chair for the Marshy Point Nature Center Council, a member of the Archeological Society of Maryland, and a member of the Maryland Free State Treasure Club. In addition to historical research, he has been unearthing the physical items of Marshy Point park with the help of the Central Chapter of the ASM and permission from the Baltimore County Parks and Recreation director. Daniel’s interest in history has been ongoing from his discoveries along the streams and through the woods of his grandparents’ 10 acres of land as a child. Growing up in a rowhome, he would randomly dig holes in his parent’s backyard and find predevelopment trash such as broken sherds and want to know everything he could as to who may have lived on the farm before the community was built. Since 2012, he has learned various techniques to discover lesser-known information though his own genealogical research. Now, as an adult, Daniel has learned the importance of context and provenience to establish the best practices while still gaining the sense of adventure when searching out the past. As acting research chair with MPNCC, he is establishing educational goals and opening up opportunities for the public to become involved.

Natural History Society of Maryland’s Archaeology Club promotes the value of archaeology in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and surrounding areas. The goal of the Archaeology Club is to educate citizenry in the ethics, methods, and artifact preservation methods of archaeology and how archaeology can be used to document, discover, and promote local history. The Archaeology Club is inclusive to all persons who have an interest in archaeology.
