Wooly Mammoths lived during the Pleistocene, a geologic era that extends back to 2 million years ago. The Pleistocene is characterized by the waxing and waning of northern hemisphere ice sheets, what we often call the “Ice Ages”. How do we know about the ice ages and what was Earth’s climate like back then? This talk will explore the ice age world, why the glaciers came and went and how they impacted the climate for wooly mammoths.
Hali Kilbourne is a climate scientist looking at the Earth’s past to help understand and predict our planet’s future. Her research focuses on understanding the climate of the last 2000 years to provide context for modern changes and to improve our understanding of climate system processes driving climate variability. This information can help us improve climate models used for predicting future climate change.
This presentation is part of The Mammoth Speaker Series, one of many programs designed to help educate, excite and engage with the Mammoth Exhibition coming to the Natural History Society of Maryland this fall. The ticket price $25 gives you access to all of 5 of talks – not just this one.
