How much do humans value nature? It turns out that’s a really hard question to answer, and it involves a lot more than dollars and cents. Come learn about how we measure the value of different kinds of ecosystem services, and how you might pick a method for a particular patch of nature you’re interested in. We will include examples of how the NOAA NCCOS team has done this around the country, from natural shorelines to cold water for aquaculture.
Meet the Presenter: Dr. Amy Freitag is a social scientist with National Centers for Ocean Coastal Science (NCCOS) working on the resilience and vulnerability portfolio as well as ecosystem service valuation, and she contributes to integrating human dimensions into several of NOAA’s long-term monitoring programs.

Freitag holds a Ph.D. from Duke University in Marine Science and Conservation, where her dissertation focused on integrating diverse knowledge types into water quality management in North Carolina. Freitag received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University, where she majored in Development Sociology and Biological Sciences. In between degrees she worked with University of Alaska Fairbanks to map subsistence resources in interior Alaska.
