If you had a hammer, you could hammer out beautiful creations using the natural dyes inside flowers. In this workshop, taught by cut-flower grower and educator Amy Davidson, you will learn the artform commonly known as eco-dying, flower pounding, hammer dyeing, or tataki zome, the ancient Japanese technique of hammering flowers or foliage on fabrics to create beautiful patterns.

Enjoy learning about natural dye techniques as you create a botanical landscape on fabric using fresh flowers and greenery grown on a local farm. Students can choose either an apron, tea towel, or canvas tote bag to craft. All supplies are provided, and students can supplement them with flowers from home. NOTE: Class will be held outside under cover.

Included:

  • Basic instructions on hammer-dyeing
  • Fabric project: choice of tea towel or apron (fabrics will be pretreated to allow flower dye to adhere to fabric)
  • Instructions for pretreating your own fabrics at home
  • All flowers used for dyeing, grown by Amy Davidson, class instructor
