Martin Schmidt, author of Maryland's Geology, offers this six-week workshop as an overview of the geology of Maryland--the landforms, the underlying rocks and their structure, and a bit on the long history that put it all together.  Maryland has a quite varied geology, so there's plenty to talk about.

10/4 - MD geology overview and a look at common minerals
10/11 - Western MD geology and basic sedimentary rock identification
10/18 - Blue Ridge geology and some igneous rock identification
10/25 - A first look at Piedmont geology and metamorphic rock identification
11/1 - A more detailed look at Piedmont geology
11/8 - Coastal Plain geology and zooming in on places of interest

We will also discuss specific places that participants are interested in, which will lead us to subjects and destinations for future workshops and field trips.

Teacher: Martin Schmidt has been teaching grades 9-12 at McDonogh School since 1978, including physics, chemistry, and geosciences over the years.  He currently teaches an Honors Geology course to 12th graders, which also earns students credits from Towson University.

His book, Maryland's Geology (Schiffer Publishers), is designed to give a basic geologic background and then apply it to the state, for students, teachers, and laymen.
