Fossil Collecting With the Natural History Society of Maryland: DAY TWO

Join us for a day of fossil collecting! We plan on collecting near Lake Koon /Lake Gordon, PA (approximately 40 minutes away from our meeting point at Staples). This location has Oriskany sandstone, a geologic formation containing fossils such as Spirifer, Brachiopods, Platystoma, Platyceras, and Crinoids as old as the Devonian period. Prepare to hunt for fossils for 3 or 4 hours at this location. Group leaders will survey participants about remaining at this location or to continue hunting at additional sites.

Meet: Meet Nick Spero at the edge of the parking lot near the tall sign for Staples and other stores in that center: https://goo.gl/maps/yFxZsQeNZct. Participants will caravan or drive independently in case they choose to end their fossil hunting early. Nick’s cell phone # is 410.371.7223.

What to bring:  Bottled water, brown bag lunch, snacks, sunscreen, tick spray, something to put fossils in (plastic pill bottles, plastic bags, etc…), toilet paper for wrapping fragile fossils and well, whatever.

What to wear: Boots, normal hiking gear, hat/sunscreen, and tick spray.

A volunteer is needed to assist with participant sign-in, collecting waivers, accepting payment, and caravan logistics. If you would like to volunteer the event cost is waived. Please contact Emily at eglaeser@marylandnature.org for more information.
