Registration

With rapidly developing news of the spread of the coronavirus in Maryland and new guidelines from state and national officials, we have decided to cancel all programs starting March 13, 2020 through Friday, April 10, 2020. Over the next few weeks we will monitor the situation and make decisions about future programming.

We hope you’ll join us for our Nature Connections series. Nature Connections is full of surprising and interesting facts about the world around us. This free family friendly program is for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Themes vary monthly, registration is recommended and there is always a craft. Bring out your inner scientist with the Natural History Society of Maryland!

How does a bear know when it’s time to hibernate? Why do April showers bring May flowers? Plants and animals don’t have calendars or watches, but many of them take cues from the changing seasons. Changes in weather with the seasons, such as temperature and precipitation, signal many organisms to enter new phases of their lives. The study of the timing of these changes is called phenology. At this month’s nature Connections, learn how climate change is affecting nature’s timing for birds, plants, and amphibians – with experts in all three fields of study.

Talk: 1:15 pm: Phenology and Climate Change by Clare Walker

Clare Walker works at the Irvine Nature Center and prior to this was an education specialist at the Department of Natural Resources. Clare is also a Master Naturalist and Gardener.

The Natural History Society of Maryland is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and contributions are tax-deductible.
