CELEBRATE 91 YEARS OF VITAL NATURAL HISTORY DISCOVERY, RESEARCH, CURATION, AND EDUCATION IN MARYLAND

In 1929, a group of men interested in the natural sciences broke away from the Maryland Academy of Sciences and formed the Natural History Society of Maryland. The Society’s Charter was officially signed on April 2nd of that year. Ever since, the NHSM has been on the cutting edge of natural history discovery, research, curation and education in Maryland. In the Society’s 1946 Annual Report, founding member, Edmund ‘Doc’ Fladung, stated that “this Society is an important cultural adjunct to the life of our City and State, and I feel it is a patriotic duty to keep it functioning and preserve it for future generations.” Thanks to the contributions of so many, the NHSM is still home to the Community of the Curious. Each Founders’ Day, NHSM pays homage to  integral contributions from the past while celebrating its present and looking forward to the future.

This year, Dr. Lisa Kraus, NHSM Archaeology Curator will present on her predecessor, Richard Stearns who was NSHM Archaeology Curator for more than 30 years, a pioneer in Maryland archeology, and instrumental in recording much of Maryland prehistory.

The Natural History Society of Maryland is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and contributions are tax-deductible.

The mission of the Natural History Society of Maryland is to foster stewardship of Maryland’s natural heritage by conserving its natural history collections, educating its citizenry, and inspiring its youth to pursue careers in the natural sciences.
