Lots of people collect rocks that look interesting. Collecting is a great way to stay in tune with what’s in nature around you. Each rock type is different, and with practice you can read the story of the rock to know how it came to be what you have found.

NHSM Geology Curator, Martin Schmidt, will help you celebrate National Collect Rocks Day on September 16 (it is a thing) by discussing the many kinds of rocks you can find in Maryland to help you understand what you may have already and think about where you’d like to investigate next. He will talk about what types of rocks are where in Maryland, and big chunks you can see (known as “outcrops”), and look at some details of rocks as well as we can in online pictures and what stories they tell.

The Natural History Society of Maryland is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and contributions are tax-deductible.

The mission of the Natural History Society of Maryland is to foster stewardship of Maryland’s natural heritage by conserving its natural history collections, educating its citizenry, and inspiring its youth to pursue careers in the natural sciences.
