April is officially Archaeology Month in Maryland. to celebrate, the NHSM Archaeology Club is hosting the first, to be annual, Archaeology Expo. Archaeology has played an integral role in NHSM’s 93 history. We are home to specimens that help trace the cultural story of the land we now call Maryland. Join us for the day and learn about technology used in archaeology, explore the artifact collections of the NHSM, observe a  flint knapping demonstration, find out how you can participate in a local archaeology excavation certificate program, and more!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS – Artifacts will be on display throughout. NOTE: For those of you who can’t make it in person. We are offering the opportunity to watch the presentations via Zoom. Select that option when checking out.
  • 11am – 12:00 pm  Flint Knapping Demonstration with Kirk Dreier
  • 12:00pm – 1:00pm  Dr. Kat Sterner NHSM Collection Presentation – Rediscovering the NHSM Archaeology Collections: The Things We Find During Rehabilitation Dr. Katherine Sterner, Towson University Since 1930 when Richard Stearns became the Curator of Archaeology at NHSM, the Society has had a dedicated interest in archaeology. The archaeology collections are unique in that they do not quite fit the bill for a “Natural History” society. They consist of cultural materials, used by indigenous peoples of many different geographic locations, including most of Maryland as well as Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia and numerous other locations. Starting in the fall of 2021, student interns from Towson University began the long process of rehousing and cataloging these collections. In the process, we learned more about the state of archaeology in Maryland and around the country.
  • 1:30pm – 2:30pm  Katharine Fernstrom CAT Program Presentation – This Certification and Training Program for Archeological Technicians (CAT program) has been developed to give members of the Archeological Society of Maryland (ASM) an opportunity to obtain recognition for formal and extended training in the techniques and goals of archeology without having to participate in an academic degree program. Participants are provided technical training in both the field and laboratory in conjunction with rotational lecture/workshop series and required reading materials. The ASM acknowledges significant contributions from similar programs sponsored by The Archeological Society of Virginia, The Council of Virginia Archeologists, The Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and the Oklahoma Anthropological Society.
