The Natural History of the Mammoth

More is known about the natural history of the mammoth than any other extinct prehistoric species. Thanks to the preservation of frozen carcasses in Siberian permafrost, the mammoth’s adaptations can be studied in detail, even down to features at the cellular and molecular levels. Another unique source of evidence is the representations of mammoths in cave art from France and elsewhere. Even aspects of social behavior can be deduced – did it differ from that of living elephants? This talk will describe the most recent mammoth finds and will draw on the latest research,
including that by the speaker. NOTE: Prof. Lister will be speaking from London, which is why we are having the talk in the morning. 

Adrian Lister is the Research Leader in Paleontology, Natural History Museum, Earth Sciences, United Kingdom and an Honorary Professor, University College London, Genetics, Evolution and Environment interested in patterns and processes of species-level evolution, adaptation and extinction. His research focusses mainly on Quaternary to recent large mammals, with special expertise in deer and elephants (including mammoths).  He has written two books on Woolly Mammoths.
