Grab your binoculars and join us on an expeditionary paddle from Wye Island Natural Resource Management Area to Pickering Creek Audubon Center! We will begin our paddle in the quiet and protected waters of Wye Island and make our way up Pickering Creek to their new living shoreline. There we will learn how native plants play a crucial role in stabilizing the shoreline, reducing erosion, and providing a vital habitat for migrating shorebirds.
From there we will begin our walk through a mile and a half of the center’s winding wooded trails. This diverse habitat is home to five species of woodpeckers—Pileated, Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy, and Northern Flicker—as well as Kingfishers, Bald Eagles, and an array of colorful songbirds. Keep your eyes and ears open for Scarlet and Summer Tanagers, Indigo Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Swallows, and White-breasted Nuthatches. Along the way, we’ll talk about the trees, understory plants, and rich ecosystems that support this vibrant wildlife community.
Our journey will be led by Linda Yungbluth, a seasoned naturalist and longtime volunteer at Pickering Creek Audubon Center. As a current board member and officer of the Talbot County Bird Club, Linda will bring a wealth of Eastern Shore birding knowledge.
As we paddle our way back to where our adventure began we will scan the skies and marsh edges for our seasonal visitors. An out and back you won’t want to miss!
The Natural History Society of Maryland is a volunteer-led non-profit organization, so the fee you pay will go directly to support the programs, the nature collections, and the building that make this kind of nature education possible.
