Nature-inspired design or biomimicry is being showcased all over the world. From trains shaped like kingfisher beaks to highways modeled after slime molds, leveraging nature’s genius is proving to be a fantastic way for humans to make our inventions and systems more efficient. This workshop acknowledges that we’re all designers, creating plans for our days, our processes, and our systemsand teaches participants how to leverage nature to improve their work. This class uses a combination of teaching, activities, and brainstorming to give participants hands-on experience necessary to incorporate nature-inspired design into their offerings and approaches. Participants will learn what nature-inspired design is, learn how to practice it, and walk away with design ideas relevant to their work.

Sage Newman is an interdisciplinary educator with a background in the fine arts as well as the biological and natural sciences. She studied at the Baltimore School for the Arts, earned a degree in physics, and completed a Master of Science in Biomimicry in 2025.

In 2024, she founded Beeja Growth Co., a small business dedicated to accessible personal development and community building. Through Beeja, Sage creates experiences that help people connect more deeply with themselves, with each other, and with the natural world. She believes that meaningful connection is a foundation for wellbeing and growth, and she designs her work to cultivate those connections in creative, practical ways.

Sage is currently training as a Master Naturalist and volunteers regularly with local nonprofits. In her spare time, she studies herbalism, trauma-informed practices, and personal and spiritual development.
